PROJECT: A large main-floor bedroom in St. Paul.
POSITIVES: Lots of sun, original wood floors and bonus space.
NEGATIVES: Poor use of space, too much furniture, and heavy drapes and rug.
This second bedroom was easily visible from the main entry, but the first thing you noticed about it was
the big bed and a large assortment of messy computer cords. Original hardwood floors were hidden beneath an oversized area
rug, and bulky drapes blocked light from the sunny, west-facing windows. "The room looked so heavy from both entry points
of the room, it was difficult to imagine living in the space," said Lori Matzke of Centerstagehome.com.
"We wanted to lighten up the mood and ensure potential buyers would be immediately attracted to the beautiful hardwood floors and
openness of the space!"
Here's what Matzke did to lighten the mood:
Matzke put the large area rug in storage and rearranged the bed to give buyers a better look at the wood
floors upon entry. Showing an open floor plan automatically makes a room feel larger.
The overstuffed white comforter was replaced with a bed-in-the-bag set that was $35 on clearance. The
red tones of the bedding play up the red tones in the floor.
To draw the buyer's attention through the room, colorful artwork was displayed above the bed, which lacks
its own headboard.
Light and airy tab-top curtains, purchased on clearance for $11.99, replaced the heavy drapes. To complete
the look, Matzke purchased finials at $7.99 a pair to make the space look more finished.
To downplay the contrast between the ashen window trim and the cherry oak floors, the walls were painted
a soft shade of pale taupe.
A room that had already been a designated home office space was reorganized to accommodate the additional
desk, chair and computer from the bedroom.
A space-consuming leather occasional chair that had been in the living room was used, along with a black
metal side table and acrylic lamp, to create a cozy reading space.
A soft red pillow on the chair and silk greens on the tabletop add texture and interest to the space.
